Week 1: Learning to Learn

Focus:

Teaching the dog that paying attention to humans is rewarding and important.

Skills Introduced:

  • Name recognition

  • Marker/reward system

  • Engagement games

  • Attention around distractions

  • Calm handling

  • Introduction to leash communication

Goal:

Dog begins offering attention and engagement willingly.

Week 2: ​Calmness Creates Opportunity

Focus:

Building patience, self-control, and calm behavior.

Skills Introduced:

  • Sit command

  • Duration foundations

  • Waiting politely

  • Threshold manners

  • Calm greetings

  • Reduced impulsive behavior

Goal:

Dog begins understanding calm behavior leads to rewards and access.

Week 3: Learning to Settle

Focus:

Teaching the dog how to relax and remain calm in structured environments.

Skills Introduced:

  • Place command foundations

  • Duration work

  • Settling around activity

  • Confidence building

  • Structured relaxation

  • Environmental neutrality

Goal:

Dog learns to disengage from overstimulation and settle appropriately.

Week 4: Coming When Called

Focus:

Building enthusiasm and responsiveness to the handler.

Skills Introduced:

  • Recall games

  • Handler engagement

  • Long-line foundations

  • Movement-based rewards

  • Mild distraction recall

  • Relationship-building exercises

Goal:

Dog begins responding more reliably to handler interaction and recall cues.

Week 5: Putting It Together

Focus:

Combining foundational skills into practical everyday handling.

Skills Introduced:

  • Loose leash foundations

  • Basic heel positioning

  • Combining sit/place/recall

  • Mild distraction work

  • Real-world handling concepts

  • Transitioning skills into daily life

Goal:

Dog demonstrates foundational understanding of core obedience concepts within structured settings.

About The Service

While the Day Training Foundation Program introduces important obedience concepts and foundational skills, many dogs benefit from the consistency, immersion, and accelerated progress offered through our Stay & Train programs.

Dogs enrolled in immersive boarding and training programs are able to practice skills throughout the day in a more structured environment with increased repetition, guided exposure, and advanced distraction work. This often leads to faster progress, stronger reliability, and more consistent real-world application.
